5 Best Paris Views...That Aren’t the Obvious Ones

Paris is a city that rewards looking twice. The first time you visit, you’ll snap all of the classic viewpoints – Notre Dame from directly in front (get closer to admire some of the grotesque architecture above the door!), Eiffel Tower from the Trocadero etc... Inevitably when you return, you’ll be lured back to the blockbuster sights – Paris does that to you. And yet, move a few streets away and you get a whole new perspective on landmarks you thought you knew inside out.

Lost passport on a Thai beach, driving existential panic - read about that here

It’s a bit like putting the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben on the National lagers of France or the UK

But , let’s face it, the Belizean equivalent is “El Castillo”, a 1,300 year old 120ft Mayan pyramid…is infinitely cooler.

Even more so when you climb the real thing and see a distinct lack of 21st century inventions like handrails or safety barriers.

Seeing Guatemala does volcanos so well, it feels like an old fashioned listicle is order!

From cooking marshmallows in the vents (pizza was also an option but $60 felt a bit excessive) to perusing assorted volcanic rock related purchases to an impromptu stick fight with @michel.carl (score draw), it’s a somewhat odd experience.

But with those views - and a promise that an eruption is pretty unlikely - it’s one of the most memorable hikes I’ve ever done and a very cool inclusion in the @lupine_travel itinerary!

Guatemala is the epitome of “why did nobody tell me about this” travel 🇬🇹🇬🇹🇬🇹 Our third stop with @lupine_travel

They some of the best chocolate and coffee (if only I drank it!) on Earth, it’s most beautiful city is ringed by three active volcanos and the Mayan history is vivid everywhere you look.

I have no idea what Mexico was like fifty years ago but if it was anything like Guatemala in 2026, those 70s tourists were in for a treat!

Delighted that my article for @bbc_travel “Are The World’s Most Beauriful Islands In Danger” has been shortlisted for the @inspire_global_travel annual awards in the “Consumer Features - Nordic” category.

Lofoten is one of the most jaw dropping locations on Earth - waters as clear as the Caribbean, mountaintop views that look like a Tolkein passage and 24 hours of daylight during the summer, granting visitors unparalleled freedom to get out and explore.

My article considers the doubled edged impact of tourism across the island and how visitors can travel thoughtfully - enjoying this spectacular landscape in a way that doesn’t adversely impact local communities. 🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴

You can understand pretty easily why the Mayans thought scarlet macaws were messengers of the Gods - I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bird quite so striking.

Our second stop on @lupine_travel trip to Central America were the 1,3pp year-old Mayan ruins of Copan in Honduras 🇭🇳 where we came face to face with these incredible birds, who appear literally everywhere in Mayan mythology.

Thanks to the efforts of @macawmountainbirdpark nearby, over 50 birds have been reintroduced to the National Park with another 300 in their care who in the words of the Foo Fighters will hopefully make their way home and learn to fly!

El Salvador must a a strong candidate for most misunderstood country on Earth.

Before visiting with @lupine_travel I held the same stereotypes, very few of them positive. The history is dark for sure but hearing stories from survivors of gang violence and civil war was a real privilege, as was their desire to welcome visitors into a country they remain incredibly proud of.

And why not? The sunsets are stunning, the landscape diverse and the people universally warm and welcoming. I can’t see myself forgetting this place in a very, very long time.

So yes, as the song goes, fly to El Salvador 🇸🇻🇸🇻🇸🇻
